Summary

A watching brief maintained during the redevelopment of this site in 2021 recorded no archaeologically-significant features or deposits. It should though be noted that the monitored works did not reach the base of the post-medieval garden soils, which potentially sealed any archaeological remains present at this location.

Map

December 2020. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of potential archaeological impact of proposed residential development.
The site lies beyond the defensive walls of King’s Lynn, with the available cartographic evidence suggesting it had probably been open land until the late post-medieval period.
No archaeologically- or historically-significant features were noted during a brief site visit.
See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 7 September 2023.

November 2021. Watching Brief.
Maintained during reduction of footprint of new building,
These works did not expose natural deposits, with the earliest deposit revealed being a dark greyish brown clayey silt layer interpreted as a post-medieval garden soil. Two pottery sherds of late post-medieval/modern date and several fragments of post-medieval clay tobacco pipe were recovered from this deposit. It was overlain by a demolition layer containing frequent fragments of concrete and frogged bricks.
See report (S2) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2021.232).
P. Watkins (HES), 7 September 2023. Amended 27 April 2024.
