Full Description
World War One memorial with World War Two additions
Location: Yarmouth Road, Hales
Type: Wheel-head Cross (Celtic)
Description: The memorial is in the form of a Celtic wheel-head cross made of granite with the IHS Christogram raised on the cross head. The rectangular shaft tapers down to a plinth that is partly polished, partly roughly-hewn. The west face of the plinth holds the dedicatory inscription and the Heckingham names. The east face of the plinth holds the names of the Hales fallen. A shallow base was added to the monument in 2002 after a traffic accident. The base holds the additional names of WW2 servicemen.

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. Additional research required.

1999. Damage and Restoration.
A traffic accident in 1999 damaged the memorial. It was repaired and re-dedicated in 2002 in its original location. The repairs included an additional base to the monument bearing the names of Second World War servicemen. A grant from the War Memorials Trust funded the addition of the new names.
