Summary

A World War One memorial with World War Two additions commemorating the servicemen of Gissing. The memorial is in the form of a wheel-head cross made of granite. It was unveiled in March 1920.

Location: 40m south-west of St Mary’s Church, Lower Street, Gissing
Type: Wheel-head cross
Description: The memorial is in the form of a wheel-head cross made of granite. The front face of the cross holds a decorative carving of a reversed sword. The cross sits on a plinth on top of a single-step base. The whole is placed on a two-stage base that is paved. The inscription is placed on the front face of the cross shaft and continues onto the plinth face. The WW2 inscription was added to the base step.
Proposed: A meeting in May 1919 chaired by Rector, Reverend W. E. S. Cooper agreed to erect a memorial cross.

Constructed/Sculpted By: Mr R. F. Perfitt of Diss, Mr Lanchester, and Mr Limmer.
Cost: £110
Unveiled: 7 March 1920 by Sir Kenneth Kemp and dedicated by the Bishop of Thetford.

AND IN MEMORY OF/ GISSING MEN/ FALLEN IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918/ (9 NAMES)
