Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from a Portland stone in ashlar, in the form of a freestanding Blomfield Cross of Sacrifice. This memorial was gifted by 1916 High Sheriff of Norfolk, L. Robinson. It was erected in 1919 to commemorate thirty-seven service members who served in World War One, and latterly nine service members who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in July 2010.

Location: Old Buckingham.
Description:
The memorial is constructed from Portland stone (S2) in ashlar, in the form of a freestanding Blomfield Cross of Sacrifice. It is used to commemorate thirty-seven service members who served in World War One, and latterly nine service members who died in World War Two (S3). It is described as “an octagonal plinth consisting of three irregular steps and a taller pedestal supports a tall octagonal shaft with cross summit to which is fixed a bronze sword.” There are inscriptions on the memorial in incised lettering, painted black. Inscription A is to the base and pedestal, Inscription B is to the base on the obverse. The associated names are listed, along with rank and regiment (S2).

Constructed/Sculpted By: Gifted by 1916 High Sheriff of Norfolk, L. Robinson. Following the design of Sir R. Blomfield’s Cross of Sacrifice for the Imperial War Graves Commission [now Commonwealth War Graves Commission].
Unveiled: 31 August 1919.
Inscription A: FOR GOD - FOR KING - FOR COUNTRY// (37 NAMES)// MCMXIV-MCMXIX// IF HIS DUST IS ONE DAY LYING/ IN AN UNFAMILIAR LAND/ (ENGLAND HE WENT FOR YOU)/ O ENGLAND SOMETIMES THINK OF HIM/ OF THOUSANDS ONLY ONE/ IN THE DAWNING OF THE NOONDAY/ OR THE SETTING OF THE SUN/ AS ONCE HE THOUGHT OF YOU.// MCMXXXIX-MCMXLV/ (9 NAMES).
Inscription B: IN MEMORY OF THE MEN/ OF OLD BUCKENHAM WHO/ FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ THIS CROSS WAS ERECTED/ BY LIONEL ROBINSON OF/ OLD BUCKENHAM HALL/ HIGH SHERIFF OF THIS COUNTY/ OF NORFOLK IN THE YEAR 1916/ 31-8-1919.
