Full Description
World War One Memorial with World War Two Additions
Location: All Saints Church, Church Road, Walsoken.
Description:
The memorial is constructed from red granite, in the form of a freestanding statue of a soldier on a pedestal. It is used to commemorate one hundred and twenty local service members who died in World War One, and latterly six service members who died in World War Two (S3). The soldier statue is described as “carrying a rifle, facing forward but with his body turned to one side, raised above a tall, slightly tapered, square section pedestal with rusticated rough hewn quoins and top stone, and with two courses of similar stones to the base… The pedestal stands on a three stepped base”. There are inscriptions, starting with the former World War One dates to the front face of the pedestal (Inscription A), with a dedication to the top step and to the bottom step of the base (Inscription B). The one hundred and twenty associated names are listed thirty to a panel on each side of the pedestal framed by the rough-hewn stones described above. The latter World War Two dedication (Inscription C) is incised on a tablet fixed to the riser of the top step of the base, it consists of the six of the associated names listed in two columns followed by the conflict dates (S2 photographs).
