Full Description
World War One Memorial with World War Two Additions
Location: Upwell War Memorial, New Road, Upwell.
Description:
The memorial is constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding statue of an angel on a pedestal. It is used to commemorate fifty-seven local service members who died in World War One, and latterly ten service members who died in World War Two. There are also a further eight names of unknown association (S2). The angel statue is described as “raised on three steps above a tall, tapered, square pedestal surmounting a stepped plinth and base. The pedestal has a moulded entablature. A union flag and laurel branch are carved on one face”. There is an inscription to the front face of the pedestal (Inscription A), with the fifty-seven names associated with World War One to the other three faces. A latter World War Two dedication (Inscription B) is to the front face of the upper step of the plinth, with the ten associated names to the other three faces. The additional eight names are to the side and rear faces of the lower step of the plinth (S2).
Proposed: Date unknown.
Constructed/Sculpted By: Possibly W. Gray, a local apprentice stonemason.
Unveiled: Around 1922.
Inscription A: THIS MONUMENT WAS ERECTED/ BY THE INHABITANTS/ TO THE HONOUR AND GLORY/ OF THE SOLDIERS & SAILORS/ OF THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WARS// 1914-1919.
Inscription B: 1939 PRO PATRIA 1945.
