Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions in the shape of a Celtic wheel-head cross. This memorial was erected sometime around 1920 in memory of the parishioners who served and died in World War One, with the addition of World War Two servicemen and one airman lost in the Berlin Airlift (1948-1949).

Location: The south-west corner of the churchyard of St Mary’s Church, Brancaster (NHER 1390)
Type: Wheel-head cross (Celtic)
Description: The war memorial is in the form of "a roughly-dressed 3m tall granite Celtic cross, with a wheel-cross head set on a tapering shaft. An inverted sword in relief runs down the upper part of the memorial" (S1). There is an inscription on the front face of the plinth. The memorial is visible through iron railings that replaced part of the churchyard wall at the time of construction. The inscription preserves the names of 31 men who died in the First World War, with the addition of 6 names from the Second World War, and 1 airman commemorated during the Berlin Airlift (1948-9).

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. Additional research required.
Inscription: ERECTED TO THE MEMORY/ OF BRANCASTER MEN/ WHO FELL IN THE WAR/ 1914 – 1919 (31 NAMES)/ THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE.
