Full Description
World War One memorial with World War Two additions
Location: Lynn Road, King’s Lynn
Type: Clock Tower
Description: The memorial is in the form of a clock tower in the late Renaissance style. It has a square plan and is constructed of Weldon stone and Carrstone. The tower stands beneath an English oak stage and a cedar roof. The tower itself has an ashlar base with “three tiers of Carrstone panels on each face.” (S2) The stage holds a white clock face. There is a wooden door in the south side of the tower. The cedar roof has horizontal boarding and forms a square spire. The roof is topped by a “leaded ball finial” (S2). There is a granite slab on the north side with the names of the WW1 fallen and a panel on the east side for the WW2 fallen. The memorial originally stood at the convergence of Lynn, Wootton, and Gayton Roads on the circular steps that formed a mini roundabout. The clock tower was moved as early as 1965 and placed in the current position in 1989/90.
