Summary

A World War One memorial with World War Two additions commemorating the war fallen of Acle, constructed around 1920. The memorial is a granite budded Latin cross with World War Two additions in the form of a granite tablet in the shape of a book.

Location: South-east corner of the churchyard of St Edmund, Norwich Road, Acle
Type: Latin cross
Description: The memorial is made of granite in the shape of a budded Latin cross on an octagonal shaft with Gothic decoration at the top and base. The shaft is on an octagonal plinth with a moulded foot. The plinth is on a low step in a raised gravel square. The primary inscription is on the front face of the plinth with 28 names on the other faces. Crossed arrows are carved on the rear face. A granite tablet in the shape of an open book on the kern at the front of the memorial records the names from WW2. The final inscription is on an oval metal plaque attached to the top step below the book.

Unveiled: 18 December 1921 by two orphaned boys, the sons of Edward Cushion and Owen Waters who were killed on the Western Front.
Inscription: TO THE/ GLORIOUS MEMORY/ OF THE/ ACLE MEN/ WHO FELL IN/ THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918.
1939-1945/ (5 NAMES).
