Summary

A World War One memorial with World War Two additions commemorating the servicemen of West Acre, East Walton, and Gayton Thorpe. The memorial is in the form of a fleur-de-lis wheel-head cross made of millstone grit with a flint base, erected around 1920.

Location: Village Green, West Acre
Type: Wheel-head Cross (Fleur-de-lis)
Description: The memorial is in the form of a fleur-de-lis wheel-head cross constructed of millstone grit with a flint base. The cross sits on a tapering square shaft on top of a square plinth. The plinth is then on a round two-stepped base. The first step of the base is “formed from four splayed stones” (S2). The memorial stands on a round sloping base made of flint. The front face of the plinth holds an illegible original inscription. The three other faces contain names. The rear face of the plinth is legible, reading 1939-1945/ (NAMES). A bronze plaque is placed on the front of the memorial with a legible inscription.

2006. Conservation.
Restoration work was undertaken on the memorial funded by a grant from the War Memorials Trust (S6). A bronze plaque was added to the front of the memorial and the base was replaced.
