Summary

A World War One memorial with World War Two additions commemorating the fallen servicemen of Barton Bendish. The memorial is in the form of a wheel-head cross made of grey granite. It was constructed around 1920. It was restored in 1977 and 2013.

Location: St Andrew’s Churchyard, Church Road, Barton Bendish
Type: Wheel-head cross
Description: The memorial is in the form of a wheel-head cross with a Sword of Sacrifice carved in relief on the front face. It sits on a plinth on top of a two-step base. The lower end of the shaft is smooth and holds the WW1 inscription. The front of the plinth holds the WW1 names, with the WW2 inscription added to the upper step of the base. A plaque was later added at the bottom of the memorial with further WW1 names.

1977. Restoration.
The memorial was restored in 1977 as part of the celebrations of the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. A plaque with additional names of World War One fallen was added at the foot of the memorial along with a dedication describing the restoration.
