Summary

A World War One memorial with World War Two additions commemorating the servicemen of Hevingham. The memorial is in the form of a wheel-head cross made of stone. It was constructed around 1920.

Location: St Mary and St Botolph Church, Cromer Road, Hevingham
Type: Wheel-head cross
Description: The memorial is in the form of a wheel-head cross made of stone. The cross arms have trefoil ends. The head of the cross rises out of a moulded collar on top of the shaft. The square-section shaft comprises of four columns decorated with floral motifs. The shaft sits on a moulded pedestal on stop of a circular step. Two hexagonal steps are below. The inscription is placed on the front face of the pedestal with the WW1 and WW2 names on the other three faces. The final line of the inscription is carved around the circular step.

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. Additional research required.
Inscription: TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN PROUD AND/ LOVING MEMORY OF THE/ MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO/ LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES/ FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ DURING THE GREAT WAR.
