Summary

A World War One memorial with World War Two additions commemorating the servicemen of Guist. The memorial is in the form of an obelisk made of stone. The memorial was constructed around 1920.

Location: St Andrew’s Churchyard, Norwich Road, Guist
Type: Obelisk
Description: The memorial is in the form of an obelisk made of stone. The obelisk is placed on a square plinth on top of a two-step base. The plinth has a “gabled cap above a cornice with cavetto” (S2). The inscriptions are placed on the faces of the plinth, with the principal inscription on the south face and WW1 names on the east and west faces. The additional WW2 inscription is on the north face. The memorial is surrounded by gravel and stone kerbs.

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. Additional research required.
Inscription: TO THE/ GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN GRATEFUL/ REMEMBRANCE OF/ THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR US IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914 - 1919./ "THEY WERE A WALL UNTO US/ BOTH BY NIGHT AND DAY."
