Full Description
September 2023. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
Earthwork banks, ditches and mounds of an unknown date are seen on aerial photographs and recent (2017) visualised lidar data (S1-S2). The date and function of the mapped features is uncertain. It is possible that some of the mapped features may have related to medieval to post medieval field boundaries, drainage, and possible settlement features such as building platforms. A dense area of earthwork post medieval to modern drainage ditches, post medieval field boundaries (which are recorded on readily available historic maps such as S3 and S4), an area of probable post medieval to modern extraction and earthworks relating to modern and natural features are also visible across the area on S1-S2. These features have not been mapped as they are either recorded in good detail on the readily available historic maps or are beyond the scope of the project. It is possible that some of the earthworks within the monument polygon dismissed as relating to the above may be archaeological in origin. Equally, it is also possible that some of the mapped features thought to be archaeological in origin may relate to natural, modern or drainage features. The earthworks can be seen clearly on S1 and S2. Some of the earthworks seen on S1 (such as the mounds and drainage ditch centred at approximately TF 9116 0907) are presumed to have been levelled as they are not visible on the later visualised lidar data (S2).
