Summary

Field boundaries and a trackway, of post medieval but possibly medieval to post medieval date, are visible as cropmarks, soilmarks and low earthworks on aerial photographs and visualised lidar data. Most are depicted on readily accessible 19th century maps. Field walking finds and documentary research have led to an area in the north of the site, around a former farm or group of farm buildings, to be interpreted as a small medieval settlement (NHER 21620). As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2017) it is likely that the features visible on the visualisations still survive as earthworks.

Map

November 2023. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
The cropmarks described below were previously recorded as part of NHER 21610 and 28888.
Field boundaries and a trackway, of post medieval but possibly medieval to post medieval date, are visible as cropmarks, soilmarks and low earthworks on aerial photographs (S1-S3) and visualised lidar data (S4). Most are depicted on readily accessible 19th century maps, such as the Tithe map (S5), and fall outside of scope for mapping by the project. A few additional boundaries are also visible, but these appear to fit the same general pattern of enclosure and have also not been mapped. Field walking finds and documentary research have led to an area in the north of the site, around a former farm or group of farm buildings, to be interpreted as a small medieval settlement (NHER 21620). As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2017) it is likely that the features visible on the visualisations still survive as earthworks, albeit very low and spread.
