Map

December 2023. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
The earthworks of boundary banks and ditches of a probable medieval date are seen on aerial photographs and on recent (2017) visualised lidar data (S1-S6). The boundaries most likely relate to medieval settlement features and probable field boundaries. Fieldwalking (NHER 30220) previously undertaken at the site recorded the presence of earthworks and recovered medieval to post medieval pottery. The earthworks were interpreted as medieval tofts relating to the site of a small common edge settlement recorded from documentary evidence (See NHER 30220). The features can be seen well as earthworks on the 1940s aerial photographs (S1-S2). The features are also visible on recent (2017) visualised lidar data (S5). As the lidar survey was flown in 2017, it is likely that the features still survive as earthworks.
