Summary

Boundaries, including field boundaries, and possibly drains, all of probable post medieval date, are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs and in some cases as low earthworks on visualised lidar data. Some elements are depicted on 19th century maps. While a post medieval date is likely for most of the features, an earlier origin for some cannot be ruled out. It is also possible that some elements could be associated with Wendling Abbey (NHER 7281) which lies to the immediate northeast of the site. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently, it is probable that those elements that are visible as earthworks still survive.

Map

December 2023. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
Boundaries, including field boundaries, and possibly drains, all of probable post medieval date, are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1-S2) and in some cases as low earthworks on visualised lidar data (S3). Some elements are depicted on 19th century maps, such as the Enclosure map (S4). While a post medieval date is likely for most of the features, an earlier origin for some cannot be ruled out. It is also possible that some elements could be associated with Wendling Abbey (NHER 7281) which lies to the immediate northeast of the site. The curving, north-south oriented bank and ditch could feasibly be a causeway and/or water management feature contemporary with the monastic site. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2017), it is probable that those elements that are visible as earthworks still survive.
