Summary

A geophysical survey undertaken in 2015 identified a number of potentially archaeologically-significant linear anomalies at the northern end of this site. Their arrangement suggests that they potentially represent a group of enclosure ditches. These anomalies all fall to the north of the line of a former road or track that was presumably removed when Oulton Airfield was created (NHER 7364). A single pit-type anomaly was also identified in this part of the site

Map

May 2015. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of potential archaeological impact of proposed photovoltaic (PV) array (solar farm).
It is noted that the scheme has been designed to preserve the layout of the former airfield (NHER 7364). This site comprises a triangular parcel of land defined by the intersecting runways in the centre of the airfield.
See report (S1) for further details.

May 2015. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site of proposed photovoltaic (PV) array (Area 2).
The most notable responses are a series of intermittent linear anomalies at the northern end of the site, which may represent ditches, and possibly enclosures. A number of the east-to-west aligned anomalies clearly correspond with a former road or track that can be seen on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S2). This was presumably removed when the airfield was created. All of the other linear anomalies lie in the area to the north of the road.
The only potentially archaeologically-significant discrete response is an isolated pit-type anomaly in the northernmost part of the site.
A large concentration of ferrous dipolar anomalies in the southern half of the site potentially represent an area of debris associated with the airfield.
See report (S3) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 22 January 2024.
