Full Description
January 2024. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project (volunteer strand).
The remnants of field boundaries and possible strip fields of medieval to post medieval date are visible as low earthworks on visualised lidar data, from a survey flown in 2017 (S1). Some of the boundaries correspond with field boundaries depicted on 19th century maps, such as the Enclosure Map (S2), but others are not. Areas of parallel ridges, too wide to be the remains of ridge and furrow, may be the remnants of strip fields or cultivation plots within the larger fields. As many of the earthworks are aligned parallel or perpendicular to modern field boundaries and cultivation patterns, it is not always possible to be certain whether the features visible on the visualised lidar data are archaeologically significant, or relate to recent agricultural activity. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently, it is probable that the earthworks still survive.
