Full Description
January 2024. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
The earthworks (since levelled) of probable medieval field boundaries, possible enclosures, trackways and drainage ditches are seen on aerial photographs (S1-S3 and S5). The features may have formed part of a wider field system. It is also possible that some of the features may have related to medieval settlement. The features most likely date to the medieval period. However, it is possible that some of the features may date to the post medieval period. Finds indicating the site of medieval settlement, as well as further multi period finds, have been previously recorded from across the area (NHER 4192, 20612 and 25554). The features can be seen well as earthworks on the 1940s aerial photographs (S1-S2). The features have been subsequently levelled and are not visible on the 1976 aerial photographs (S3) or the relatively recent (2017) visualised lidar data (S4). Some of the features are visible as soilmarks and cropmarks on S3 and S5. The previously recorded probable Bronze Age ring ditch (see NHER 4192) was not seen on the sources consulted by this project.
