Summary

Trial trenching at this site in 2015 uncovered a number of ditches and discrete features, although the majority produced no dating evidence. The one exception was a small pit that contained a mix of Late Saxon and early medieval pottery (suggesting a possible 11th-century date). The alignments of the ditches do though suggest that the majority were most likely of medieval or later date.

Map

April 2015. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The 11 trenches excavated revealed a number of ditches, pits and possible post-holes, although the majority of these features produced no dating evidence. The one exception was a small pit at the western edge of the site that contained several sherds of Late Saxon Thetford-type ware pottery and a single early medieval sherd. These finds suggest a probable 11th-century date for this feature, although it is noted that all of the pottery sherd are small and abraded. The other discrete features were widely dispersed across the site and largely unremarkable. Finds were limited to two prehistoric worked flints.
The majority of the ditches recorded were aligned either north-east to south-west or north-west to south-east. Although finds were limited to small quantities of animal bone a medieval to post-medieval date seems reasonably for these features, which were either parallel with, or perpendicular to the Holt Road. Two notable exceptions were a pair of north-north-west to south-south-east aligned ditches in the south-east corner of the site. A possible natural channel was also recorded in this part of the site.
