The Iron Duke.

November 2017. Listed Grade II.
This Art Deco public house was built in the late 1930s and completed in 1948 to the designs of Arthur W Ecclestone (who designed a number of public houses for Lacons Brewery around this time). It is a well-preserved example of an improved inter-war pub with distinctive massing, curved frontages, irregular elevations and flat roofs. Visual interest is added by elements such as the loggia and fluted columns and a variety of detailing in finely laid brickwork. The plan form survives in its original configuration, with a vestibule leading into a large open plan lounge bar and saloon bar. Various internal fixtures and fitting remains that reflect its original design.
It is constructed of concrete with a steel frame and is clad in red brick with brick and red clay tile dressings and flint detailing. The flat roofs are covered in replacement asphalt sheeting.
The first-floor provided accommodation and is plain in its detailing. There are extensive cellars with plank and batten doors and a small lift shaft.
