Summary

A test pit dug at this location in 2017 revealed only a thick make-up deposit of relatively recent date. It should though be noted that this test pit was only dug to a depth of c.1.10m – it is likely that more archaeologically-significant deposits survive beneath this level. Finds recovered included a small number of residual medieval to post-medieval pottery sherds and ceramic building material fragments.

Map

August 2017. Test Pit.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
A single test pit was excavated to a depth of c. 1.10m (the depth required by the proposed development).
The lowest deposit encountered was a thick layer of mid brownish grey clayey silt, the base of which was not reached. This probable made-up deposit lay immediately beneath the loose yellow sand bedding for the current tarmac surface and produced a mix of medieval, post-medieval and early modern finds. These finds included medieval, post-medieval and post-medieval/modern pottery sherds, a medieval/post-medieval brick fragment, post-medieval to modern tile and drain fragments; post-medieval clay tobacco pipe fragments; bottle and vessel glass fragments of likely 19th- to 20th-century date and pieces of animal bone.
Although more archaeologically-significant deposits are likely to survive at a greater depth these will not be impacted by the proposed development.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
