Summary

A watching brief maintained during groundworks at this site in 2018 uncovered the roof of a previously unrecorded cellar associated with 1 King Street (NHER 12908). The earliest deposit encountered was a probably alluvial silt, which was cut by an undated pit and overlain by modern made ground deposits. No finds were recovered.

Map

June-August 2018. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of three new dwellings within yard area of 1 King Street (NHER 12908).
Two parallel east-to-west aligned foundation trenches were excavated, the northernmost of which (immediately adjacent to the south wall of 3 King Street) encountered the angled roof of an east-to-west aligned post-medieval cellar extending from the street range of 1 King Street. The deeper foundation trench dug to the south revealed a pale silt that was likely to represent an undisturbed alluvial layer. This alluvial deposit was cut by a relatively small pit of uncertain date and overlain by what was clearly a modern made ground deposit (a band of crushed asphalt lying at the interface between the two layers).
No finds were recovered.
See report (S1) for further details.
The cellars associated with 1 King Street were subject to further recorded when it became clear that the proposed scheme could potentially negatively impact these structures. See NHER 12908 for further information.
