Map

February 2024. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
Possible medieval to post medieval settlement features and possible ridge and furrow are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in 1942 and 1944 (S1-S2). The earthworks are subsequently levelled with some of the features visible as soilmarks and cropmarks on later (1945,1976 and 2017) aerial photographs (S3-S5). The date of the features is unknown. However, a medieval to post medieval date for the features is suitable. It is also possible that some elements of the site may have related to field boundaries rather than settlement features. Post medieval to modern drainage features (not mapped) are also visible across the area on the aerial photographs. It is possible that some of the mapped features may have related to drainage ditches rather than archaeological features. Previous investigations, including field walking and documentary research (NHER 20766, 20774, NHER 20775), have suggested the site of medieval settlement and the site of a post medieval manor house at this location (See NHER 20775).
