Full Description
February 2024. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
Boundaries and possible garden features of probable post medieval to 20th century date are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs (S1-S2) in the grounds of Avenue House (NHER 1024). A bank and curvilinear ditch to the west of the house could be garden or landscaping features; a ditch to the south and a bank to the east look more like field boundaries or similar features. The curvilinear ditch does not look particularly old on the photographs and may be of 20th century date. The most recent available Google Earth aerial photography (from 2022, S3) shows that the earthworks were almost certainly levelled during development of the area, with some elements destroyed by the construction of the A47 Dereham bypass. The curvilinear ditch may survive within a patch of woodland, but there is no clear evidence of it on visualised lidar data (from a survey flown in 2017, S4).
