Summary

These forecourt railings, gates and gatepieces were erected in 1799. A main wrought iron double gate is flanked by hollow iron gate pieces, to either side of which are spearhead railings. Smaller gates to the left and right are flanked by later brick piers. These structure are listed Grade II.

Forecourt railings, gates and gatepieces in front of St Helen's Square, which is part of the Great Hospital complex (NHER 624). Previously recorded under NHER 26113.

April 1986. Listed, Grade II.
Listing Description excerpt:
"Forecourt railings,gates and gatepieces, 1799 by John Browne 'in accordance with Mr. Bird's plan'. Hollow iron gate pieces with lattice panels and ball finials flank wrought iron double gates. Spearhead railings to left and right on stone dwarf wall have nine iron panels. Smaller gates to right and left flanked by(later) brick piers with ball finials. Source: [(S1)]."
