Full Description
December 2021 and January 2023. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of new detached garage and extension to existing dwelling.
The footing trenches excavated for the new garage encountered a coarse natural sand at a depth of approximately 0.65m. The only feature identified was a probable pit that contained two sherds of Late Saxon/early medieval (Saxo-Norman) pottery. This feature was though possibly of a later date, as it was observed to cut through the subsoil layer, from which a fragment of medieval roof tile was recovered.
The footing trenches for the extension to the south of the house revealed no archaeologically-significant remains. Here the earliest deposit revealed was a natural grey organic silty sand, which lay at a depth of c.0.90m, below a thick subsoil layer.
Information from draft report.
