Map

October-November 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of southern part of large proposed development area (Trenches 90-134 and 141-144).
The 49 trenches excavated at this location revealed little in the way of potentially significant remains, with only a small number of scattered ditches recorded. The majority of these feature were aligned north-to-south, with all but one corresponding with former field boundaries depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S1). An east-north-east to west-south-west aligned feature at the eastern end of the site also corresponds with a former boundary depicted on this map. A large amount of brick and tile rubble and other modern debris within this feature probably represented debris generated during the demolition of a small building that is also shown at this location. The other ditches associated with former field boundaries produced a range of late post-medieval to modern finds, including pottery sherds, iron objects, ceramic building material and clay tobacco pipe.
The small number of other, differently-aligned ditches were potentially associated with earlier activity, although none produced any dating evidence.
Unstratfied finds included post-medieval lead weights and a small number of undated copper alloy and iron objects.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 2 April 2024.

October-November 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site of proposed new food store in south-west corner of site (Trenches 135-140).
The six trenches excavated revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
