NHER 68218 (Cropmark and Earthwork record) - Cropmarks of undated, possibly Iron Age to Roman, rectilinear enclosure

A rectilinear enclosure of unknown date is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs (S1-S3). Its function is also unknown. Its morphology is such that it could feasibly be of Iron Age to Roman date, and material of this date has been found in the vicinity (NHER 60320 for example). The cropmark of the west side of the enclosure is partially confused by almost correlating (in part) with a former field boundary (depicted in historical maps, such as the Ordnance Survey 1st edition map (S4)). Similarly, a possible entrance in its eastern end may instead be a truncation caused by a later field boundary, also depicted on the same map.

Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms.
The strip of land examined coincided with the western and eastern sides of this enclose. Two potentially corresponding linear anomalies were recorded, although the westernmost may represent a ditch associated with the similarly-aligned former post-medieval field boundary shown on (S4), rather than one forming the western side of the enclosure.

Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms.
This phase of work saw the excavation of a trench that coincided with the western side of this enclosure. A single potentially corresponding ditch was identified, although this may have actually been associated with the similarly-aligned former post-medieval field boundary shown at this location on (S4), rather than the cropmark enclosure. No dating evidence was recovered.
