Full Description
April 2024. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
Boundary ditches, part of a trackway and an area of ridge and furrow, all of probable medieval to post medieval date, are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in 1946 (S1), in the vicinity of Spurn Farm. More recent aerial photographs from 2022 (S2) and visualised lidar data from a survey flown in 2017 (S3) show that the earthworks have been levelled. The features form part of a swathe of earthworks of broadly medieval to post medieval date located along Watery Lane. While most elements appear to be agricultural in character, the site could include some settlement features.
The site includes part of a braided trackway along its southeastern side; this has been mapped by extent. A curvilinear ditch bordering a block of ridge and furrow on the north side of the site may be a drain, or even part of a hollow way. The other features comprise a variety of fragmentary boundary ditches, at least some of which may be field boundaries.
