A watching brief maintained during the installation of a new water pipe in 2017 recorded a single undated ditch at this location. This feature corresponded with one of the various linear cropmarks recorded in this area that are likely to represent boundaries of medieval to post-medieval date (NHER 3395).

Location

Map sheet TF61NE
Civil Parish MIDDLETON, WEST NORFOLK, NORFOLK

Map

May-June 2018. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks on route of Marham Resilience Scheme pipeline.
A single ditch was identified, at TF 6716 1722. Although undated this feature appears to correspond with one of the many linear cropmarks that have been mapped in the immediate vicinity of Middleton Towers. At present this group of boundaries (recorded as NHER 3395) is only broadly dated as medieval to post-medieval, although it is clear from historic maps that a number were still extant in the 19th-century.
No finds were recovered during this work.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
