Summary

A double-ditched boundary visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs, coinciding with a low earthwork bank visible on visualised lidar data, are probably part of the boundary of medieval to post medieval Gressenhall Park (NHER 50576). As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2017) it is probable that any earthwork still survives.

Map

April 2024. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project (volunteer strand).
A double-ditched boundary visible as cropmarks on Google Earth imagery (S1), coinciding with a low earthwork bank visible on visualised lidar data (S2), are probably part of the boundary of medieval to post medieval Gressenhall Park (NHER 50576). As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2017) it is probable that any earthwork still survives. A ditched boundary was previously mapped here by an NMP survey, and recorded as part of NHER 50576. The Google Earth imagery (S1), however, shows a faint internal bank, while the visualised lidar data (S2) shows faint traces of a surviving bank. Like other parts of the boundary identified during this project, this section is now recorded as a separate ‘child’ record. It should be noted that the boundary is shown as a field boundary on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6 inch map (S3).
