Summary

Trial trenching at this site in 2022 revealed little in the way of archaeologically-significant remains, with only four poorly-dated ditches recorded. A range of unstratified finds were though recovered, including potentially Iron Age and Roman pottery sherds, a small assemblage of medieval pottery, a post-medieval coin and a number of other, Late Saxon to post-medieval metal objects.

August 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The eight trenches excavated revealed little in the way of archaeologically-significant remains, with just four poorly-dated ditches and a number of probable natural features recorded.
Only one feature produced any finds - an east-to-west aligned ditch at the northern end of the site that contained several fragments of what was either a Roman tile or (more likely) a post-medieval brick. The other ditches included two adjacent north-to-south aligned features and one aligned north-north-east to south-south-west
Unstratified finds recovered during this work include several handmade pottery sherds of possible Iron Age date, Roman pottery sherds, a small assemblage of medieval pottery, single fragments of post-medieval pantile and clay tobacco pipe, a piece of slag, animal bone, a post-medieval coin and various other, undated and Late Saxon to modern metal objects. These metal finds include an undated iron nail and lead waste; a Late Saxon stirrup-strap mount, a medieval buckle or strap end fragment and post-medieval buttons and a ferrule. The only modern object of note was a 1920s British Army General Service button.
See report (S1) for further details.
