Summary

Late 19th-century maps shown former quarry workings at this location. Trial trenching undertaken in 2022 confirmed the presence of large pits infilled with modern debris, which had almost certainly destroyed any earlier remains once present.

Map

June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site (Trenches 1 and 2).
Both of the trenches excavated at this location encountered large, deep, pit-like features. These were almost certainly infilled quarry pits, as the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S1) clearly shows a series of former workings in this plot of land. Both pits contained large quantities of modern waste, including bricks, concrete, metal and glass. No earlier finds were recovered.
See report (S2) for further details.
