Full Description
March 2024. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
The site of post medieval to modern cottages and the earthworks of possible associated boundaries or garden features are seen as earthworks on aerial photographs and on visualised lidar data (S1-S7). As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2017) it is likely that the earthworks still survive. The cottages are visible as extant structures on the 1940s aerial photographs (S1) and are recorded on the readily accessible historic maps such as S8 and S9. The cottages are levelled between 1976 (S2) and 1988 (S3) with the building platform associated with the cottages visible as an earthwork and foundations on S4-S7. A number of earthwork probable post medieval to modern banks and ditches are also visible across the area on S5. It is possible that these features may relate to boundaries or garden features associated with the former cottages. A hollow is also visible on the visualised lidar (centred at approximately TF 8903 1525). It is possible that this feature may relate to a former pond or garden feature. It is also possible that the hollow may be natural in origin and has therefore been mapped by extent. A possible earthwork mound (centred at approximately TF 8905 1526) or bank has also been mapped by extent. It is uncertain as to whether this feature is archaeological or natural in origin.
