Summary

The earthworks of possible post medieval water meadows, Osier beds or post medieval to modern drainage ditches are visible on aerial photographs and on recent (2017) visualised lidar data. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently, the features presumably still survive as earthworks. The origin of the features is uncertain. The form and pattern of the features are similar to other examples of post medieval water meadows recorded further to the west (NHER 31189 and 68087) along the River Nar. It is also possible that the features could relate to post medieval Osier beds. However, the features may relate to a dense area of post medieval to modern drainage ditches.

The earthworks of possible post medieval water meadows, Osier beds or post medieval to modern drainage ditches are visible on aerial photographs and on recent (2017) visualised lidar data (S1-S7). As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently, the features presumably still survive as earthworks. The origin of the features is uncertain. The form and pattern of the features are similar to other examples of post medieval water meadows recorded within (NHER 68087) and just outside (NHER 31189) the project area along the River Nar. It is therefore possible that the features could relate to post medieval water meadows. It is also possible that the features could relate to post medieval osier beds. However, the features may relate to a dense area of post medieval to modern drainage ditches which are also visible across the area on the consulted sources. As the archaeological origin of the features is uncertain, the site has been mapped by extent.
J. Powell (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 08 May 2024.

No trace of these remains had been recorded during the monitoring of river restoration works at this location in 2012. It should though be noted that the new channel excavated was relatively shallow, so archaeologically features present would not necessarily have been visible in its side.
See NHER 69548 for further details.
