November 2022-April 2023. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with installation of new water main (Area 1). This section of the pipeline route was subject to archaeological monitoring due to its proximity to a probable Bronze Age round barrow (NHER 50756).
The initial stripping of topsoil from this section of the working easement revealed no archaeological remains but the subsequent excavation of a narrower trench through the remaining overburden exposed a number of pits and ditches – most of which were undated.
The two ditches recorded included a north-north-east to south-south-west aligned feature that produced no finds but was probably of relatively recent date, lying adjacent to and parallel with the modern field boundary. The second ditch was a roughly east to west aligned feature of uncertain date. A pit adjacent to this ditch contained a partially complete sheep or goat skeleton likely to represent a modern burial. The three other pits recorded lay at the southern end of the site and were all undated.
Two additional discrete features were deemed to be natural 'sinkholes' (i.e. solution features).
No finds were recovered at this location.
See report (S1) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2023.4).
