Map

November 2022-April 2023. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with installation of new water main (Area 3). This section of the pipeline was subject to archaeological monitoring as it passed through the site of an undated enclosure visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (NHER 35522).
The initial stripping of topsoil from this section of the working easement revealed no archaeological remains but the subsequent excavation of a narrower trench through the remaining overburden exposed a number of undated ditches. These included two north-north-west to south-south-east aligned ditches in the western field, within the area in which linear cropmarks have been noted. Two ditches were also recorded at the eastern end of the eastern field, one aligned north-to-south and the other north-east to south-west.
A small assemblage of unstratified finds was recovered at this location, comprising a single late medieval/early post-medieval pottery sherd; medieval and post-medieval coins and a number of other metal objects, including a medieval spur rowel; post-medieval buckle, belt mount, spoon, unidentified copper alloy object and lead musket ball and a post-medieval/modern iron nail.
See report (S1) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2023.4). This archive does not include the finds, which have been retained by the landowner.
