Full Description
November 2022-April 2023. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with installation of new water main (Area 6). Work at this location took place after contractors stripping topsoil reported the discovery of structural remains (this section of the pipeline route was not one of those that had been selected for continuous archaeological monitoring).
The remains of this structure comprised a roughly rectangular clay surface measuring approximately 5m x 3.3m, an 'L'-shaped wall extending around two of its sides and a single possible post pad or truncated wall fragment. The wall and the possible post-pad were both constructed primary of flint cobbles with occasional bricks and had been built without foundations, directly on the subsoil. Although some mortar was present most of the flints appeared to have been laid dry. The brick fragments recovered include two early, medieval examples of 'Flemish' type, with the remainder being of later medieval/early post-medieval date. As all of these bricks were clearly re-used the exact age of this structure is uncertain. Although a single pottery sherd was recovered from the clay surface this was early medieval and therefore certainly residual.
See report (S1) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2023.4). This archive does not include the finds, which have been retained by the landowner.
