Summary

Sections of probable Roman road are visible as cropmarks and soil marks on aerial photographs and as low earthworks on visualised lidar data. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2017) it is likely that the features still survive. The features likely relate to sections of the Roman road recorded more broadly as NHER 3697.

Map

March 2024. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
Sections of probable Roman road are visible as cropmarks and soilmarks on aerial photographs and as low earthworks on visualised lidar data (S1-S4). As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2017) it is likely that the features still survive. The features likely relate to sections of the Roman road recorded more broadly as NHER 3697. It is possible that one of the sections of bank (centred at approximately TF 8738 1748) may relate to a post medieval boundary recorded on the readily accessible historic maps (S4-S7). A section of ditch is also visible as an earthwork on the visualised lidar data (centred at approximately TF 8742 1760). It is possible that this feature may relate to the Roman road. The alignment of the Roman road can also be seen as spread soilmark (mapped by extent) on S2.
