Map

February-March 2024. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The four trenches excavated revealed a number of pits and ditches which produced few finds but were most likely associated with medieval to post-medieval phases of activity.
Evidence for earlier activity was limited to two small sherds of Early Iron Age pottery, both of which were probably residual within later features.
The majority of the ditches recorded were aligned north-north-west to south-south-east, running roughly parallel to London Street to the west. One contained two sherds of medieval pottery but finds were otherwise limited to a single fragment of daub and fragments of animal bone.
The discrete features recorded were all fairly large, suggesting they had probably been quarry pits. These included a pit that contained a single sherd of late medieval/early post-medieval pottery, fragments of late post-medieval chimney pot and pig bones. Only animal bone were recovered from the other pits.
Information from draft report.
