Summary

Metal-detecting in 2023 recovered a significant Late Saxon coin hoard consisting of 184 silver coins and coin fragments associated with a shattered pottery vessel. The coins are all of Æthelred II and were minted between c. AD 979 and 997, with their fresh and unworn condition suggesting deposition likely took place in the mid 990s.

Late Saxon coin hoard comprising 184 silver coins (or fragments thereof) associated with a shattered pot. The bulk of the hoard was lifted in a block, with 92 of the coins and several pieces of detached pottery recovered from the surrounding area. The coins are all of Æthelred II (Æthelred the Unready; AD 978-1016) and were minted between c. AD 979 and 997. Their fresh and unworn condition suggests that deposition took place in the mid 990s. The accompanying pottery vessel has been identified as a Grimston-type Thetford ware jar (S1).
