Full Description
December 2023. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
An area of low earthwork banks and ditches of an unknown date are visible on visualised lidar data (S1). As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2017) it is likely that the features still survive as low earthworks. A section of bank which most likely relates to a post medieval field boundary has been recorded at TF 8542 1468. Further low earthwork banks and ditches are visible across the area on S1. It is possible that some of these features could be archaeological in origin and may relate to post medieval or potentially medieval field boundaries. However, it is also possible that some of the features may relate to post medieval field boundaries recorded on the readily accessible historic maps (such as S2 and S3), features associated with modern agricultural activities and natural features. As the archaeological origin of the earthworks is uncertain the features have been mapped by extent. Several pit features are also visible across the area on S1. The pits most likely relate to post medieval extractive pits and have therefore not been mapped as they fall outside the scope of the project.
