NHER 68526 (Cropmark and Earthwork record) - Earthwork sections of Roman road

Sections of a probable Roman road are visible as cropmarks and soilmarks on aerial photographs (S1-S7) and as very low earthworks on visualised lidar data (S8). As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2017) it is likely that the earthwork sections of road still survive as low earthworks. The features most likely relate to the Roman road recorded more broadly as NHER 3697, as the features follow the suggested alignment of the road (see NHER 3697) . The northern section of road (centred at approximately TF 8607 0932) may overlay the site of a probable Bronze Age round barrow (NHER 66904 and NHER 4598). Possible sections of ditch which may be associated with the road are visible as cropmarks on S4 and S7 . It is possible that some of the mapped ditch features could be natural rather than archaeological in origin, as the cropmarks of geological features are also visble across the area on S4 and S7.
