Full Description
December 2014. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site of proposed extension to existing cemetery.
The three trenches excavated revealed only a single feature - a north-to-south aligned ditch which lay at the eastern end of the easternmost trench. The position of this ditch suggests that it was almost certainly associated with the westernmost of a series of parallel linear cropmarks thought to potentially represent a prehistoric multiple-ditched boundary (part of a group of potentially pre-Roman remains recorded as NHER 36729). Unfortunately, no dating evidence was recovered from the excavated feature, although the leached, sterile nature of its fills would be consistent with a prehistoric date. A sample taken from the secondary fill of the ditch produced only material likely to be intrusive.
