Summary

Limited trial trenching at this location in 2010 and 2018 identified only a single feature – a ditch that produced a small amount of Roman pottery. Although this material was insufficient to convincingly date the feature it should be noted that extensive evidence for Roman period activity was identified immediately to the south of this site (see NHER 55301). The site straddles a minor tributary of the River Wensum and an associated peat deposit was encountered in all six of the trenches excavated. Hand augering demonstrated that this deposit was to be up to 1.7m deep.

Map

June 2010. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site (Trench 13).

See report (S1) for further details.
The archive associated with this work has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2011.152).

August-September 2018. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of part of large proposed development site (Trenches 23-24, 30 and 38-39).
The two westernmost trenches revealed a north-east to south-west aligned ditch running parallel to the tributary of the River Wensum that passes through this site. A sample taken from its fill produced a single charred cereal grain and a small amount of charcoal.
This ditch was cut into a peat which was observed across the site. Augering within the three eastern trenches demonstrated that this deposit was up to 1.7m deep.
No unstratified finds were recovered.
Information from report uploaded to OASIS. HER copy awaited.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2019.66).
