Summary

A trial trench evaluation of the western part of this site in 2014 revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits. A watching brief maintained during the installation of an electrical cable in the 2015 did though record two ditches of probable Late Iron Age or Early Roman date to the east of this area. These contained a mix of handmade and wheelmade pottery, along with a number of other finds, including a probable crucible fragment.

September-October 2015. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with installation of new electrical cable (Area 1).
This section of the stripped easement revealed two adjacent north-north-west to south-south-east aligned ditches, both of which appeared to terminate within the excavated area. These produced a small assemblage of Middle/Late Iron Age handmade pottery, along with several sherds from wheelmade Late Iron Age/Roman transitional vessels of possible 'Belgic type'. The conservative nature of Late Iron Age pottery in the county (with handmade wares continuing for a period alongside wheelmade ‘Romanising’ forms) means that these features could well date to the post-Conquest period. Other finds recovered included a possible loomweight fragment, a probable crucible fragments (with residues suggesting it had been used in the smelting and/or casting of copper alloys), undiagnostic prehistoric flint flakes and a fragment of burnt flint.
See report (S2) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2019.234).
