Summary

Faden's map depicts two watermills located immediately east of Heacham. It is believed that this is the approximate location of the eastern mill. Buildings are depicted at this location on the 1839 Heacham Tithe map but they do not appear on the 1886 First Edition Ordnance Survey map. Further research of the Tithe Apportionments and other documentary evidence is required to confirm this. See full description for further discussion of alternative interpretations.

Map

July 1983. Documentary Research.
Fadens map of 1797 (S2) depicts a watermill surrounded by streams at this location.
This is distinct from Caley's Mill (NHER 13131) located approximately 320m to the west, which is also depicted in Faden's map (S2).
This mill was originally recorded under NHER 16297, Context 5. See entry below dated September 2024 for further details.
Information from HER Record Notes (S1).
E. Rose (NAU), 15 July 1983. Amended H. Hamilton (HES), 13 September 2024.

September 2024. HER Enhancement.
Initial examination of paper records in 1983 estimated the likely location of this mill to be TF 6880 3753.
Closer examination of rectified historic maps indicates that the mill depicted by Faden is likely located closer to TF 68838 37498, where several structures are depicted on the 1839 Heacham Tithe Map (S3). It is of note that these structures are no longer depicted on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map (S4) which was surveyed in 1886.
Equally, due to the scale of Faden's 1797 map which was surveyed between 1790 and 1794, it is possible that the eastern mill depicted there is actually Caley's Mill (NHER 13131) and the western mill could perhaps be Mill House (TF 68294 37591), which is still extant. Further research of the Tithe Apportionments and other documentary records is required to clarify this.
H. Hamilton (HES), 13 September 2024.
