Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2020/2021 identified a group of linear anomalies likely to represent the corner of a rectilinear enclosure and an associated trackway. Subsequent trial trenching uncovered a number of corresponding ditches, although unfortunately no dating evidence was recovered. The alignment of these remains does though suggest a medieval to post-medieval date is perhaps the most likely. Other features recorded included an undated pit within the enclosure and a similarly aligned ditch to the north that corresponded with a former field boundary depicted on 19th-century maps.

Map

May 2020-January 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F217).
This survey identified a cluster of north-north-west to south-south-east aligned linear anomalies that appear to represent ditches forming a rectilinear enclosure with a trackway extending from its south-east corner. The size of the enclosure is unclear as only one corner falls within the area examined. A number of relatively weak discrete anomalies within the enclosure are potentially infilled pits, although these are not necessarily archaeological in origin.
The only other response of note is an east-north-east to west-south-west aligned linear anomaly that corresponds with a former field boundary depicted on the Reepham tithe map (S1).
A number of scattered discrete dipolar anomalies are likely to represent ferrous objects on or close to the surface (most likely modern debris). The remaining discrete anomalies are all of probable geological origin.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F217; Trenches 553-557).
Three trenches placed to investigate the probable enclosure and trackway identified by the preceding geophysical survey uncovered a number of corresponding ditches, although unfortunately none produced any dating evidence. An undated pit was the only feature identified within the interior of the enclosure.
A trench placed to the north of the enclosure encountered an east-north-east to west-south-west aligned ditch that corresponds with a former field boundary depicted on the Reepham tithe map (S1). This had also been identified by the preceding geophysical survey.
A trench at the southern end of the site revealed an undated ditch aligned north-north-east to south-south-west.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 18 September 2024.
